Abstract
The global energy landscape is at a pivotal juncture, characterized by a complex interplay of factors that include climate change, technological advancements, geopolitical dynamics, and shifting consumer preferences. This presentation will provide a concise overview of ExxonMobil’s Global Energy Outlook 2023, which offers a comprehensive analysis of the current state and future trajectories (2050) of the global energy sector.
Then, this talk will present “Hydrogen Embrittlement in Energy Industry: Perspective on Mechanisms of Sulfide Stress Cracking (SSC) and Approaches to Improve SSC Resistance in Line pipe Steels” to demonstrate a key material challenge and mitigation in energy industry. Sulfide stress cracking (SSC) is a critical issue in the oil and gas industry, particularly in environments where hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is present. This abstract provides a concise overview of SSC, a destructive form of corrosion that can lead to catastrophic failures in pipelines, vessels, and other components used in the energy sector. This shares the real industrial case of SSC failure and consequences, and presents the advancement of fundamental mechanisms of SSC propagation as well as new metallurgy for sour service linepipe steels with improved performance. In conclusion, this will briefly discuss new material challenges during energy transition.
