Energy storage technology encompasses systems designed to store energy in a particular format, enabling its utilization at a later stage. The significance of this technology has been steadily growing, notably in its utilization of sustainable energy sources like solar and wind power to mitigate carbon emissions, paired with the deployment of electrochemical energy storage devices such as supercapacitors or rechargeable batteries. Specifically, the adoption of eco-friendly materials in the field of energy storage has attracted considerable interest due to its potential to mitigate environmental impact, enhance energy storage performance, and secure advancements in technological innovation and competitive advantage.

In this presentation, I will introduce the operating principles and component materials of supercapacitors and rechargeable batteries. I will also discuss cases where traditional energy storage materials have been replaced with environmentally sustainable alternatives, thereby enhancing both sustainability and energy storage performance. Specifically, we will explore instances where starfish and wood have been utilized in supercapacitors and alkaline ion batteries. Finally, I will share initial results of utilizing seaweed-derived materials in the next-generation Li-S battery system, discussing encountered challenges and proposed solutions.
