The demand for Li-ion batteries (LIBs) is expected to skyrocket due to the global trend of electrification in mobility. As such, massive spent LIBs will be generated after their life spans of about 3 to 10 years. Valuable metal resources inside spent LIB cathodes such as Li, Ni, and Co should be recovered by a proper recycling process to reuse them for the synthesis of cathode active materials (CAMs) to meet their surging demand. There are three representative methods for recycling spent LIBs including hydrometallurgy, pyrometallurgy, and direct recycling. Specifically, this talk highlights the importance of recovering valuable metals from spent LIB cathodes through the resynthesis of CAMs, which is a promising recycling method that directly produces CAM precursors from LIB leachate. This process encompasses six key steps, including pretreatment, leaching, purification, adjustment of metal concentrations, precursor synthesis, and sintering. The potential introduction of impurity elements during CAM resynthesis is also dealt with. Additionally, the talk addresses challenges related to the commercialization of the resynthesis process.
