"A Triumph for Korean Science and Technology!" POSTECH Professor Hyung Sub Kim Breaks 18-Year U.S. Monopoly to Win the Prestigious 'TMS MPMD Award'

Professor HyoungSeop Kim from the Graduate Institute of Ferrous & Eco-Materials Technology and the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at POSTECH was honored with the 2025 TMS MPMD (Materials Processing & Manufacturing Division) Distinguished Scientist/Engineer Award at the 154th TMS Annual Meeting held in Las Vegas, USA, on March 25 (local time). This award is regarded as one of the most prestigious accolades, recognizing individuals who have made long-term contributions to the design, synthesis, processing, and performance of engineering materials.

As a globally renowned scholar in the field of metallic materials, Professor Kim received this distinguished honor in recognition of his outstanding research achievements and contributions to the field. Notably, he is the first researcher affiliated with a non-U.S. institution to receive this award since it was established in 2007—marking a historic moment that elevates the international standing of Korean science and technology.

Professor Kim’s recent work includes pioneering strategies to significantly enhance the efficiency of metal component repair processes using direct energy deposition technology. Additionally, his research into the mechanical properties of lattice structures has introduced advanced methodologies for achieving lightweight designs and impact-resistant enhancements critical to defense applications.

Expressing his gratitude, Professor Kim stated, "This award is a source of pride not only for POSTECH but also for Korea’s scientific community. It serves as an important catalyst for advancing Korean science and technology. I will continue to dedicate myself to developing cutting-edge materials technologies that contribute to both scientific progress and industrial growth in Korea."
