Message from the Dean

Breaking the Frontiers of Advanced Materials through Global Collaboration and Innovation

Welcome to the Graduate Institute of Ferrous & Eco Materials Technology (GIFT) at POSTECH.

Since its establishment in 2005, GIFT has grown into a world-class education and research institution in the fields of steel and energy materials, built upon a powerful partnership with POSCO and other leading industries. Today, standing on the foundation of the unrivaled technological expertise we have cultivated over the past two decades, we are ready to take a leap forward. By strengthening academic excellence through active international cooperation with prestigious universities and research institutes worldwide, we aim to become a “Global Hub for Next-Generation Eco-friendly and Advanced Materials” that proactively responds to the rapidly changing global industrial landscape.

While steel remains the backbone of all industries, we will continue to innovate its value through low-carbon, eco-friendly steelmaking technologies and advanced alloy design. However, the future of GIFT does not stop there. Leveraging the breakthrough technologies secured in the steel sector, we are committed to leading the following core strategic areas:

First, we will secure academic excellence based on global networks. By drastically expanding joint degree programs and international collaborative research with leading overseas universities, we will create an environment where our students can grow into global leaders, working alongside world-renowned scholars. Through these efforts, we will produce academic achievements recognized on the global stage.

Second, we will lead innovations in advanced metallic materials and manufacturing processes. We will deepen research on new-concept metallic materials, such as High-Entropy Alloys (HEA), and secure "super-gap" technologies that surpass the limits of conventional materials by integrating hydrogen-reduction steelmaking, additive manufacturing (3D printing), and intelligent manufacturing processes.

Third, we will take the lead in ensuring technological sovereignty for national strategic industries and providing future solutions. From extreme-environment materials for defense and aerospace to materials for next-generation Small Modular Reactors (SMR), we will develop irreplaceable core technologies in strategic sectors that will serve as the nation’s future growth engines.

Fourth, we will complete sustainable energy solutions. By maximizing the performance of next-generation battery materials and advancing hydrogen production, storage, and transportation technologies, we will nurture experts in energy materials who will lead the era of carbon neutrality.

GIFT aspires to achieve more than just academic excellence; we pursue “Living Research” where laboratory achievements translate directly into industrial innovation. By communicating closely with researchers, producers, and consumers worldwide, we will cultivate leaders who can propose preemptive solutions to global challenges.

The power to change the future lies in materials, and the power to innovate those materials lies right here at GIFT. We invite you to join us on this journey as we open new horizons for eco-friendly advanced metals and battery material technologies with the brightest minds.

Thank you.
