POSTECH GIFT Launches Joint PhD Supervision Programme with FYUST in China
Developing Global Talent through POSTECH Doctoral Education: Up to 20 Students Annually under a 10-Year Partnership
· Joint PhD Supervision Programme leading to a POSTECH degree in metallurgy and energy materials
The Graduate Institute of Ferrous & Eco Materials Technology (GIFT) at Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) has signed an agreement with the School of Materials Science and Engineering (SMSE) at Fuyao University of Science and Technology (FYUST), China, to operate a Joint PhD Supervision Programme Leading to a POSTECH Degree.
The agreement establishes an international joint education programme through which outstanding students from overseas will be admitted to POSTECH's regular doctoral programme and jointly supervised by faculty members from both institutions. Students who complete the programme and fulfil all POSTECH degree requirements will be awarded a doctoral degree from POSTECH, while FYUST faculty members will participate in joint supervision.
Up to 20 Students Annually to Enrol in POSTECH's Regular Doctoral Programme
The two institutions will jointly recruit up to 20 doctoral students each year in materials science and engineering. Applicants must meet the admission requirements of both institutions, including POSTECH's English-language requirements, and POSTECH will make the final admission decision.
Selected students will be enrolled as full-time POSTECH doctoral students throughout the programme and will spend at least half of their normal period of study at POSTECH. Coursework, research-progress evaluations, dissertation preparation, and degree examinations will be conducted in English.
FYUST to Provide Financial Support Equivalent to Full POSTECH Doctoral Tuition
FYUST will provide participating students with financial support equivalent to the full POSTECH doctoral tuition. This support is expected to allow students to focus on their academic and research activities in a stable environment. POSTECH and FYUST will also provide research stipends in accordance with their respective regulations and the students' periods of residence.
POSTECH Ensures Academic Quality of Its Doctoral Degrees
A joint supervisory structure will be established for each student. A POSTECH professor will serve as the chief supervisor, while a FYUST professor will participate as an external co-supervisor. POSTECH will oversee annual academic and research evaluations, dissertation examinations, and the final oral defence in accordance with its academic regulations.
FYUST, located in Fuzhou, Fujian Province, is a research-driven and globally oriented university developing education and research programmes in advanced science and technology, including materials science and engineering. Its School of Materials Science and Engineering focuses on functional materials, energy materials, new metallic materials, and related fields, offering strong potential for collaboration with POSTECH GIFT.
From Joint Education to Research Collaboration and Intellectual Property
The two institutions plan to expand their partnership through international joint research, high-quality publications, collaborative research projects, intellectual property, and technology commercialisation.
A New Model of Internationalisation Bringing Outstanding Talent to POSTECH
Professor Hyoung Seop Kim, Dean of POSTECH GIFT, said, "This agreement is a new model of internationalisation that will attract outstanding students from around the world to POSTECH's regular doctoral programme and develop them into leading researchers in materials engineering by combining the research strengths of both institutions."
He added, "The programme is designed to maintain the high academic standards required for a POSTECH doctoral degree, from admission through research evaluation and degree examination. Starting with joint doctoral education, we will expand our collaboration to international joint research and the creation of intellectual property."
The agreement will remain in effect for 10 years from the date of the final signature. The two institutions plan to continue expanding educational and research cooperation in materials science and engineering.
