Prof. Chong Soo Lee of POSTECH's Graduate Institute of Ferrous & Energy Materials Technology has established two international standards for evaluating hydrogen embrittlement safety of materials, one of the key hydrogen energy technologies, in collaboration with the KTL.
The two international standards are standards for comprehensive hydrogen embrittlement tests, such as high-level tests, electrochemical tests, and salt water spray tests for hydrogen vulnerability safety evaluation. This is an essential test method for evaluating the safety of materials used in building a hydrogen energy infrastructure.
Hydrogen embrittlement is a phenomenon in which hydrogen is absorbed into a metal, weakening the mechanical properties of the metal, and when hydrogen embrittlement occurs in metal materials such as steel, serious safety accidents such as the destruction of large machines or structures can occur.
Hydrogen energy has been attracting attention as an alternative to overcoming the climate crisis caused by excessive carbon use. Although technologies such as hydrogen station construction, such as technologies that increase the efficiency of hydrogen fuel cells, are set to be commercialized, evaluation technologies and international standards for hydrogen vulnerability of materials have not been prepared.
The research team of Prof. Chong Soo Lee and KTL have established international standards through joint research over the past decade or so. The enactment of this international standard is meaningful in that Korea can secure technology leadership when establishing hydrogen energy infrastructure in the future.
Meanwhile, the two international standards enacted and revised this time are ISO 16573-1: 2015 (established), 2020 (revised) and ISO 16573-2: 2022 (established).
