POSTECH announced on the 25th that it was finally selected for the "Center for Heterogenic Metal Additive Manufacturing Material and Parts" Project at the National Competition for Basic Research Projects of the Ministry of Science and ICT. The selected public offering project is highly regarded by metal experts as a key keyword for the growth of the next-generation steel industry, which has a great effect on creating new demand markets in the future and has a high connection with other industries. The Heterogenic Metal Additive Manufacturing Material Parts ERC project costs 14.85 billion KRW (National expense 13.5 billion KRW, local government expense 1.35 billion KRW) in total. For 7 years from 2022 to 2029, POSTECH (Prof. Hyoung Seop Kim of GIFT), the leading research institute, plans to push ahead with the project. Metal Additive Manufacturing (or Metal 3D Printing) is a method of locally melting powder layers according to a given pattern and stacking them layer by layer. That is a process to enhance metal material components. It is a manufacturing process that completes finished products at once without manufacturing and assembling dozens of parts. This can be applied to steel, aviation, small module nuclear power plants, etc. In addition, this project is expected to maximize synergy by creating a new market by being applied to the metal field through preoccupation with the market for alloy powder materials for manufacturing metal laminates and innovation in manufacturing processes. Recently, the size of the 3D printing metal material market is $214 million overseas in 2025 and $81 million in Korea in 2024, which is expected to grow in the future.
