On June 2, the Ministry of Science and ICT selected 10 ‘healthy laboratories’ in 2021 that can serve as models for domestic laboratories to spread a healthy laboratory culture.
From 2020, MSIT has been sharing the best practices of healthy laboratories by selecting and supporting laboratories that show excellent laboratory culture, research management, and research performance. From now on, MSIT will visit 10 labs every month to encourage and share best practices with signboards and field meetings.
The 10 laboratories selected this time are characterized by having a horizontal culture, such as operating laboratories in which students participate in common. Excellent cases such as sharing research data, revitalizing industry-university cooperation projects, and supporting researcher careers were discovered. POSTECH Structural Nano Metals Processing Laboratory (Prof. Hyoung Seop Kim) designated intensive working hours from 10 am to 4 pm, allowing free work and leisure activities at other times.
To spread excellent laboratory culture to each laboratory, selected healthy laboratories will be awarded with MSIT Minister’s Award and rewarded with a healthy laboratory certification mark.
MSIT’s R&D director said, “In order for young scientists, the future leaders, to study happily and achieve research results, it is necessary to establish a healthy culture in the laboratory unit, which is the main pillar of the research environment.” “Healthy research culture is not forced, but in the field. In the future, the government will make efforts to discover and spread excellent culture in the field.”
