Prof. Frederic Barlat gave six lectures by video-conferencing for an advanced course of the prestigious International Centre for Mechanical Sciences (CISM) during the week of May 3, 2021. These lectures were part of a week-long course on Advanced Theories for Deformation, Damage and Failure in Materials, coordinated by Prof. Holm Altenbach from Otto-von-Guericke-Universität in Magdeburg, Germany. Prof. Barlat’s lectures covered the topics of classical theory of plasticity as well as advanced experimental and theoretical plasticity concepts highly relevant for applications involving complex loading histories. The feedback from the students was very positive.

The International Centre for Mechanical Sciences (CISM) is a non-profit organization, founded in 1968 to favor the exchange and application of the most advanced knowledge in the mechanical sciences, in interdisciplinary fields like robotics, biomechanics, environmental engineering and in other fields such as mathematics, information and system theory, operations research, computer science, and artificial intelligence.

Located in the Palazzo del Torso build in the sixteenth century in the center of Udine, Italy, the Centre’s facilities include two lecture halls, seating 80 and 50 persons respectively, several smaller lecture and meeting rooms, the Centre’s library, secretariat, administrative, technical offices and a printing press. In addition, the building features works of arts. It is an excellent place to be for academic and cultural purposes, providing an opportunity to dream during pandemic years!

CISM is international in both scope and structure: the Scientific Council, rectors, and lecturers are selected from among the acknowledged authorities in their respective fields the world over. The principal activity of the Centre is the organization of courses, seminars, workshops, symposia, and conferences to present the state-of-the-art of these sciences to researchers. It also provides advanced training for engineers operating in industry.

CISM is funded by the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, the Province and the city of Udine, and local public and private institutions, together with other member institutions in Europe and abroad. CISM also benefits from financial support from National Research Council of Italy (CNR) and UNESCO.
